LED Floodlights

九月 1st, 2010

LED Floodlights are a type of outdoor lighting used in many residential landscaping plans. These fixtures are used to provide relatively large amounts of light to an area, or “flooding” it with light. There are many different types of floodlights to choose from, and each offers different levels of illumination and energy consumption. When comparing floodlights, consider the intended function of each unit along with the cost of power and maintenance.
Compare the intended function of each floodlight to your lighting needs. Some floodlights are designed to enhance safety and security while others are used to provide light for outdoor activities. Look for floodlights that will meet your needs, then compare other features.

Consider style and design. Floodlights are available in many different styles and finishes. Look for units that complement your home and blend in with your backyard landscaping. Choose a finish that will hold up against exterior elements, such as nickel or chrome, instead of steel, which may rust over time.

Review the bulbs required for each type of light. Different lighting technologies require different bulbs and consume different amounts of power over time. Fluorescent and halogen bulbs use less energy and cost less to run than incandescent bulbs. LED lights are among the most cost-effective, while any bulb powered by solar technology will help keep your electric bill in check. When comparing bulbs, consider the upfront cost of each bulb, its expected lifespan and the amount of energy needed to run each bulb.
Compare the light output of each type of floodlight. The amount of light a lamp produces in measured in lumens, so higher numbers of lumens means a greater amount of light. The distance this light can travel is measured in foot candles, so look for higher numbers of foot candles if you need each light to cover a larger area.

Worklight

七月 14th, 2010

Worklights are often built into a theatre as a fluorescent light as in the photo at right. However, some theatres may use, as a supplement to or instead of the fluorescent lights, either the normal stage lights (which produce a lot of heat) or just scoops.

In theater, a worklight is a high-intensity lamp which is used to illuminate the stage for the benefit of technicians. Technicians use these lights rather than the stage lights for a number of reasons. Firstly, it take much less technical knowledge to turn on worklights, so even people with no knowledge of electrics can turn them on. Secondly, regardless of the lights hung for the specific show, they provide fairly consistent and complete lighting. Finally, and most importantly, they are designed to be cheap and easy to re-lamp, in contrast to theatrical fixtures which have expensive lamps and would burn through color gels if used to illuminate stage work.

Worklights are not designed to light the stage in an aesthetically pleasing way, but rather to be efficient in terms of space and heat; however they may occasionally be used to emphasize plot elements during a show. They are generally near-white. Worklights are usually placed on catwalks and battens, or can be permanently built in. If not hard wired into the control system the connectors are often marked or attached in a way to prevent them from mistakenly being removed during a strike/load out.

Worklights can also be used during performances and rehearsals, to provide dim lighting for technicians backstage.

Night Light

七月 13th, 2010

Though Skippy the Hamster powers this night light by running on this excercise wheel, the same concepts and low-rpm alternator design could be applied to a school science project using different energy sources! A small wind or hydro turbine could easily power this alternator.
The Otherpower.com staff thought of building a hamster-powered nightlight a couple years ago at a rather, uh, soused company Christmas party. Then recently Analise, an 8th grader from Albuquerque, NM, contacted DanF through the AllExperts.com Science For Kids forum, asking ‘Can a rodent generate enough electricity to power a nightlight by running on it’s wheel?’ That was enough inspiration for us to start the project, and we soon added Skippy the Hamster to the Otherpower.com payroll. He’s a Syrian Hamster, and we chose that breed since they are nocturnal and like to run on the exercise wheel. Analise will be using a mouse named Ghost for her science fair project.

We bet that Analise will be working on some of these challenges for her project, and keeping careful records. We just helped her with the alternator design — I don’t think they teach it in school these days. And we hope others will try this experiment, and refine it for their own needs too! As for us — the silliness level here at work has reached an all time high–even more so by finding out that the project actually works! Skippy is happily employed by Forcefield and keeps DanF from stumbling during those late night light trips to the bathroom. We’ll keep feeding him hamster chow (Skippy, that is) and see how many watt hours he makes yearly!

Police baton

七月 12th, 2010

Police baton was originally a wooden handle that fit into a hole on the side of a millstone used to grind rice and other grains, dating back to 15th century Okinawa. The handle, which was easily disengaged from the millstone, became a very effective weapon of defense. The Tonfa’s circular movements as a farm implement evolved into its rotating strikes as a weapon. They may be used for blocks, thrusts, and strikes.

In 1906, the ownership of weapons was prohibited on the Okinawan Islands by the Japanese invaders. As a result, an exploration of self-defence techniques and new weapons for self-defense began. By spinning the tonfa around the short handle, tremendous striking force may be generated. By using the long portion in conjunction with the short handle, police baton may be used for numerous come-a-longs and arm locks.

Warning – Use and misuse of martial arts weapons involve serious risks, including injury, disability, or even death. Weapons are sold only for training under expert supervision, for demonstration of forms collection or display purposes. Inspect weapons before each use to ensure they are in proper condition. Do not use weapons for sparring or contact. User assumes all risks of injury.

Police baton were often used simultaneously, and were very efficient against armed assailants. The side of the tonfa was used for blocking, and the ends for direct punches. Continued practice with the tonfa can help improve balance, coordination and physical strength.

Talk of Bicycle lighting

七月 9th, 2010

The earliest bicycle lighting and motor-car lamps were often powered by acetylene gas, the medium calcium of carbide now almost unused except by cavers. The light they gave was very bright but because they needed to be cleaned after use, and that the burner blocked easily, they were somewhat temperamental, and the arrival of battery lamps from the late 1890s, was welcomed.[1]

Early battery lamps generally used a lead-acid battery, but these were replaced by self-contained dry cells; lamps became smaller and more reliable. At the same time dynamos were developed which generated energy from the bicycle’s own movement. These were more practical, as storage density in batteries was at this time very low.

Not all jurisdictions required use of lights after dark. In the UK the law requiring use of rear lights was resisted by cyclists’ groups on the grounds that it downplayed motorists’ obligation to be able to stop well within the distance they can see to be clear.

Replaceable-cell battery lights had a renaissance on the invention of the alkaline battery, with a much higher storage density. Moulding techniques for plastics also improved, allowing lens optics to be refined at low cost thus making more efficient use of the light output. During the 1980s the lighting market became more globalised: in Europe, the French “Wonder Lights” and Ever Ready brands gradually disappeared in favour of American, Japanese and German products.

In recent times there have been many advances: exceptionally efficient dynamos; cheap high-output sealed-unit halogen lamps originally developed for decorative Bicycle lighting; improved storage density in rechargeable batteries driven by the computer industry; high-output light emitting diodes (LEDs); white LEDs; high intensity discharge (HID) lights crossing over from the automotive sector.

LED Lamp

十月 15th, 2009

This all-weather luminaire offers an extended LED lamp life, maintenance-free operation, long-lasting durability, major energy savings, and reduced light pollution, all translating into reliability, ecological sustainability and sizable budget savings. Standard wall-pack luminaires are notorious for reduced control of light output because of their poor optical configuration, contributing to light pollution, wasted uplight and a shallow light projection. The high-power LED lamp Wall-Pak’s design achieves a much more efficient illumination coverage — The optical center of the lens is aligned with the lamp source for an even symmetrical distribution of light that redirects light to minimize glare. It effectively sends a wide-focused circular beam of around 85 degrees that spreads 157 degrees vertically and 38 degrees horizontally.

LED Tube

十月 15th, 2009

The design and fabrication of this LED based lighting system took approximately 6 months from start to finish. As you may have read already, the goal was to match the light output of a 32 watt T8 fluorescent lamp while using significantly less energy. This is an ambitious task because T8 fluorescent lamps are the more efficient flavour of this technology. LED Tube that were designed are intended to run on sealed lead-acid batteries which means they can accept an input voltage of anywhere from 10.5 V to 13.5 V. This input voltage was chosen to make LED Tube compatible with solar or wind energy systems. This means that if your home or building is operating on solar or wind energy, you can connect LED Tube directly to the batteries and bypass the inverter. This allows you to purchase a smaller inverter and requires you to have less solar panels (due to the energy loss when converting from 12 VDC to 120 VAC).
